Come si vota How to vote
The Comites of New York is elected on 4 December 2026. You vote from home, by mail. There is nowhere to go and no line to stand in.
The most important thing on this page: the ballot does not come on its own. It only goes to people who ask for it.
This is true even if you voted in the referendum in March. It is true even if you have been on the AIRE register for thirty years. You have to apply by 4 November 2026. It takes ten minutes and you can do it by email.
Le due date da ricordare The two dates to remember
4.11.2026
Last day to ask for a ballot. Your request must already have reached the Consulate by this day.
4.12.2026
Last day for your filled-in ballot to arrive. The postmark does not count: what counts is the day the envelope reaches the Consulate.
1. Puoi votare? 1. Can you vote?
Servono tutte e tre queste cose: You need all three of these:
- Sei cittadino o cittadina italiana. You are an Italian citizen.
- Vivi nello Stato di New York, in New Jersey, in Connecticut o alle Bermuda, e risulti iscritto all’AIRE qui da almeno sei mesi. Cioè da prima del 4 giugno 2026. You live in New York State, New Jersey, Connecticut or Bermuda, and you have been on the AIRE register here for at least six months. That is, since before 4 June 2026.
- Hai almeno 18 anni il giorno del voto. You are 18 or older on election day.
What is AIRE? It is the register of Italians living abroad. If you signed up with the Consulate when you arrived, you are on it. If you are not sure, just ask: elettorale.newyork@esteri.it.
2. Chiedi la scheda entro il 4 novembre 2. Ask for your ballot by 4 November
Three things, ten minutes.
-
Scarica il modulo Download the form
È il modulo del Consolato. Una pagina sola. It is the Consulate’s form. One page.
-
Compilalo e firmalo Fill it in and sign it
Without your signature the request counts for nothing. This is the most common mistake.
-
Aggiungi una copia del documento Add a copy of your ID
Passport or identity card. The copy must also show your signature: if it is on the back, photograph the back too.
Poi mandalo, come preferisci Then send it, whichever way suits you
Se hai una PEC: con.newyork.anagrafe@cert.esteri.it A phone photo of the form is fine, as long as it is readable. If you have certified mail (PEC): con.newyork.anagrafe@cert.esteri.it

3. Vota, quando arriva la busta 3. Vote, when the envelope arrives
-
La busta arriva a casa tua The envelope arrives at your home
The Consulate sends it. Inside there is the ballot, more envelopes and a sheet of instructions.
-
Leggi il foglio e segui l’ordine Read the sheet and follow the order
The envelopes go one inside the other, in the order written on the sheet. It feels fussy, but getting it wrong can void the vote.
-
Rispedisci subito Send it back right away
The envelope must arrive at the Consulate by 4 December 2026. Do not leave it to the last week.
Domande che ci fanno spesso Questions people ask us
Ho votato al referendum di marzo. Devo chiedere lo stesso? I voted in the referendum in March. Do I still have to ask?
Yes. For general elections and referendums the ballot goes out automatically to everyone on the AIRE register. Not for the Comites: this is the one case where you have to ask.
Can I go and vote in person on 4 December?
No. The Comites is voted by mail only. There are no polling stations. 4 December is simply the last day your envelope can reach the Consulate.
Non so se sono iscritto all’AIRE. I don’t know whether I’m on the AIRE register.
Scrivi all’Ufficio Elettorale del Consolato e chiedi: elettorale.newyork@esteri.it. Meglio farlo adesso che a fine ottobre. Write to the Consulate’s Electoral Office and ask: elettorale.newyork@esteri.it. Better now than at the end of October.
Ho cambiato casa. I have moved house.
Update your address with the Consulate before sending the request. The ballot goes to the address they have on file, not to the one you write on the form.
Ho fatto domanda e non arriva niente. I applied and nothing has arrived.
Scrivi a elettorale.newyork@esteri.it spiegando quando hai mandato la domanda. Non aspettare dicembre per farlo. Write to elettorale.newyork@esteri.it saying when you sent your request. Do not wait until December to do it.
E se lascio passare il 4 novembre? What if I miss 4 November?
You will not get a ballot and you cannot vote. The Consulate writes “by and no later than”: the deadline does not move. Which is why it is worth doing the moment you finish reading this.
Che cos’è il Comites What the Comites is
The Comites is the Committee of Italians Abroad: a group of people elected by the community who act as the link between those who live here and the Consulate and Embassy.
